I read through this article with a sense of despair as well as frustration. This young man took his life because he found that he could not defend the faith that he held as the cornerstone of his existence. I was also frustrated by the biology teacher for "pushing his views" on this kid. Why did the teacher have an interest in "changing" this kid's viewpoint? Isn't the teacher there to teach biology, not change this kids view? What happened to respecting all views or being diverse or inclusive? Well, we all know that academia is focused on evangelizing the world to their very narrow worldview. We have no nature, therefore, you can be whatever you want to be as long as you do not oppose the point of view that you have no nature!
Here are some tips for parents of faith:
- It is our responsibility to get ahead of the curve. Every parent may want to give their kid a copy of the God Delusion and then a copy of a counter point like the Dawkins Delusion. We need to expose kids to what the other side says and then deal with the strengths and weaknesses before it blindsides them in public.
- It is our responsibility to defend and test our faith, therefore, we should understand the best arguments against our faith and try to find reasonable solutions to challenges in the marketplace fo ideas.
- We should demand more of our academic institutions and start doing what the ACLU does...we should start aggressively suing when a teacher goes over the line. This teacher should be sued with the language of the left. He was insensitive to a minorities worldview. He should go to sensitivity training. Christians and non-christians that care about academic freedom should protest him and carry pictures of the kid on pickets outside of his class. The Dean should be forced to apologize.
- We have to show kids that there are different models for creation. For instance, kids should know that folks like Francis Collins believe in evolution, but he is still is a believing Christian.
I live in Boston and I believe in special creation. What I have had success with is leading with Francis Collins as a slap down. Collins wiped out Dawkins on their only debate and his book is basically a rewrite of CS Lewis, but can help take the issue off the table for those who find that evolutionary theory trumps the Christian faith.
